Wildlife of Asturias

Brown bear in the wild

Asturias is one of the last places in Europe where endangered species such as the brown bear, wolves and wild boar can be found in their natural state - a testament to the magnificent preservation of the Asturian mountains.

A brown bear in Somiedo Natural Park

Bird-watchers will be enthralled by the abundance of eagles, vultures, jays, partridges, owls and more.
And on the slopes of the Sueve mountain we find the native breed of semi-wild horses - asturcones - forever enshrined in local myths and legends.
Tip: Go & visit the bears at Trubia - 2 sisters who were rescued as cubs after their mother was shot by an illegal poacher. They are kept in ´semi-liberty´ in a 5 acre compound, and are fed every day at 12pm (a good time to guarantee a glimpse) to supplement the food they forage naturally.
