Asturias is one of the last places in Europe where endangered species such as the brown bear, wolves and wild boar can be found in their natural state - a testament to the magnificent preservation of the Asturian mountains. A brown bear in Somiedo Natural Park Bird-watchers will be enthralled by the abundance of eagles, vultures, jays, partridges, owls and more. And on the slopes of the Sueve mountain we find the native breed of semi-wild horses - asturcones - forever enshrined in local myths and legends. Tip: Go & visit the bears at Trubia - 2 sisters who were rescued as cubs after their mother was shot by an illegal poacher. They are kept in ´semi-liberty´ in a 5 acre compound, and are fed every day at 12pm (a good time to guarantee a glimpse) to supplement the food they forage naturally. |
