The Western coast of Asturias is more rugged than that of the East, with dramatic deep ravines and a sprinkling of picturesque, authentic fishing villages. Tapia, Cudillero and Luarca are all characterful, working fishing towns and all with plentiful, good seafood restaurants, as you might expect! An Asturian fishing boat Cudillero is reminiscent of a Cornish fishing village - with houses built into the steep hillsides that face the harbour, and a single narrow street wending down to the water´s edge. Popular in summer with day-trippers keen to sample the fishy delights on offer and to soak up the atmosphere generally. Luarca, while also a popular destination with holiday-makers in summer, is still very much a genuine working fishing town, rather than just a simulcrum for tourists! Tapia de Casariego is a wonderfully relaxing little town with a beautiful beach, and is most famous for the quality of its surfing. It is the venue for the biggest surf competition to be held in Asturias, if not Spain - the World Qualifying Series Goanna Pro. The layout of Tapia and the beach here provides an ideal, natural amphitheatre. This is a major event attracting thousands of spectators, but retaining a relaxed and friendly atmosphere |
