Beaches of Asturias

Rodiles, Villaviciosa

The Estuary at Rodiles

Rodiles beach on the Villaviciosa estuary is without doubt, the most famous and most popular of all of Asturias' many fine beaches.

Villaviciosa estuary at Rodiles is stunningly beautiful

The Villaviciosa Ria (estuary) is a protected environment of outstanding natural beauty (great for birdwatching) and Rodiles beach is the jewel in its crown. Its sparkling golden sand stretches for more than a kilometre and is backed by picnic areas in the shade of scented Eucalyptus trees.

In summer the beach has full lifeguard service - in 2008 it was named the safest beach in Spain.
2008 also saw the opening of brand new shower-toilet and changing facilities at the beach.
There are a handful of bar/cafes and a small general store set back from the beach itself.

Local surf school 'Rodi Rides' has a concession set up by the carpark, from where you can hire boards and wetsuits or book surf lessons with qualified (and English-speaking) instructors.

Rodiles is, in fact, the most famous of all the surf beaches in Asturias and with good cause. The rivermouth can produce a world-class wave and attracts many excellent surfers, both locals and travellers. For the beginner or intermediate surfer, the beach break is the best place to catch waves.

Espasa

Heading Eastward from Villaviciosa and Rodiles there is a plethora of beaches and coves to choose from.
Near the town of Colunga, Espasa is another large, long and beautiful beach which also has seasonal lifeguards and a number of bars etc.
Here there is also a surf school in summer.
On windy days, Espasa is also popular with kite surfers.
