Known throughout Spain as 'Paraíso Natural' (natural paradise) Asturias is a well-protected treasure trove - there are 5 Natural Parks, 1 National Park, 10 Nature Reserves, 11 Protected Landscapes and 40 Natural Monuments within her borders. Us, on the way to climb the Naranjo de Bulnes, the iconic emblem of the Asturian Picos Geology is writ large on the landscape of Asturias, with massive limestone mountains (over 2600metres high) sweeping down to the coast, where sandy beaches lie amidst limestone cliffs and we can trace the footprints of dinosaurs from Asturias' Jurassic past. The National Park of the Picos de Europa is located in the Cantabrian mountains and straddles the provinces of Asturias, Cantabria and Leon. A place of outstanding natural beauty it is a paradise indeed for the bird-watcher, walker, mountaineer, rock-climber, canyoner or sight-seer alike. |
