SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA The capital of Galicia is the destination for thousands of pilgrims who undertake the Camino de Santiago each year, hence the saying 'Santiago prays'. Santiago de Compostela is a magical and atmospheric, medieval city. Its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site attests to its cultural and architectural significance. More recently, it has become a destination for those who make their pilgrimage via low-cost airlines - Ryanair flies here from 5 destinations, including Liverpool & London. The fact that Santiago is also a university city is reflected in the vibrant nightlife. Partying until dawn is easy to accomplish here (unless you’ve just arrived after a 5 week walk from the Pyrenees, that is!) A CORUÑA The second largest city in Galicia (after Vigo) and a really fun place to visit, A Coruña enjoys a wonderful seaside setting which many hostelries take full advantage of with outdoor dining and drinking areas, adding to the vibrant, festive feel of the place, particularly in summer time. Another university city, it is definitely imbued with all the youthful energy that implies. COSTA DA MORTE The rugged coastline west of A Coruña is the somewhat sinisterly named Costa da Morte (Coast of Death). This name has been earned through a rich history of shipwrecks, smuggling and wreckers! ORTIGUERA and the Ortiguera Celtic Music Festival in mid-July LUGO The inland town of Lugo is the provincial capital and has an impressive, walled centre, a relic from Roman times. The old town itself is a pleasant place for a stroll, with some lovely architecture and lots of good restaurants and bars. Tapas is the thing to try here. FISTERRA AND CABO FINISTERRE - THE END OF THE EARTH Standing on the headland at Cape Finisterre, looking out at the wild Atlantic, it´s easy to see how it came by its name, from the Latin, literal meaning ‘End of the Earth’. These romantic historical associations, coupled with the dramatic location have made this a popular stop with tourists. |
