The cider was flowing freely in the streets of Torazo, Cabranes last night as the villagers celebrated winning the prestigious prize of 'Pueblo Ejemplar' (Exemplary Village) of Asturias.
A worthy winner, Torazo is a beautiful little village - architecturally intact and with stunning views of the Picos. The key deciding factor for the judges however, was how well Torazo preserves its heritage - with an overriding respect for tradition and its cultural roots pulsing through everyday village life.
With only 93 residents on the census, it's not a large place but many of those born here and living away keep second homes here and visit regularly, for weekends and holidays, helping to keep village life very much alive.
As Cabranes residents ourselves, living just 4 km from Torazo, we heard the celebratory rockets being fired last night and we wholeheartedly concur with the judges' decision. Torazo, and indeed Cabranes as a whole, is a very special place, between the mountains and the sea where one really can step back in time to a slower age steeped in Asturian tradition.
!Olé Cabranes!
